ἔτι, anticipating the contrary state of things in c. 46, § 5.

διαρπασθέντα For the position of the attributive see on προσβαλλούσας, c. 35, § 2.

ὑπῆν, ‘was there to their hand.’ Cf. ὑπῆρχον, c. 32, § 2, and διὰ τὸ ὑπεῖναι ἐλπίδα, vi. 87.

προθύμως . . . ἔφερον the opposite of χαλεπῶς or βαρέως φέρειν. ‘Were zealous in the conduct of the war.’ τὰ τοῦ πολέμου like τὰ τῆς ὀργῆς, ii. 60.

οὐ πρὸς σφῶν μᾶλλον = ἧσσον πρὸς σφῶν (sc. than in the interests of Tissaphernes).

ἔτι Θηραμένους παρόντος i.e. before he returned to Sparta. He was only sent to bring out the fleet (c. 26, § 1; c. 29, § 2), and set out to return, c. 38, § 1. The treaty is called his treaty in c. 43, § 3, and c. 52. He is here looked upon as a kind of direct representative of Sparta, with some authority apart from the nauarch.

ἐποίουν not intended for ἐποιοῦντο. ἐποιοῦντο ξυνθήκας would = ξυνετίθεντο, but ἐποίουν ξ. = ‘they constructed another set of agreements.’ The subsequent adoption of them is implied. In v. 76, σπονδὰς ποήσαντες πρὸς τοὺς Λ. καὶ ξυμμαχίαν, the meaning is ‘bringing about,’ since it is used of a party seeking to engage the whole. So v. 32 and 38. In ii. 15, ἑορτὴν ποιοῦσι, Shilleto renders ‘appoint.’
