ἐς τὸ νησίδιον. Stahl's τι is not good. The article is anticipative, the knowledge of the existence of such an island being assumed. Cf. c. 21 (init.) and note on ἔτι, c 36, § 2. The island was one of the Πέλοπος νῆσοι and is now called Ovrionisi.

Παρῆσαν γὰρ καὶ. καὶ is suggested by the mention of βοήθειαν. ‘The Pelop. on their side had reinforcements.’

ἐπὶ τὰς ναῦς ‘to the support of their ships’, cf. iii. 97.

εἴρητο . . . Ἀλκαμένει, ‘Alcamenes had been directed by the ephors.’ Ἀλκαμένη (acc. and inf. const.) is rendered almost impossible by the position of ὑπὸ τῶν ἐφόρων (P-S).

ὡρμημένων not ‘having started,’ for this they had not done, but cf. c. 8, § 2. Add Hdt. vii. 1, μᾶλλον ὥρμητο στρατεύεσθαι, ‘was ready and eager to . . .’

τὴν ἐν . . . καταφυγήν = τὴν ἐς Ρ. καταφυγὴν καὶ τὴν ἐν αὐτῷ μονήν. Cf. c. 2 (init.), τὴν ἐκ τῆς Σικ. κακοπραγίαν.

πρῶτον with ἁπτόμενοι, like εὐθύς, ‘at their very first dealing with . . .’
