Θουρίαις. Thurii was a lately founded and very mixed colony of Magna Graecia. In vii. 33 (B.C. 413) Thurii is divided into two factions, for and against Athens. The latter faction was expelled. The position must have been subsequently reversed.

Δωριεὺς a Rhodian mentioned as Olympian victor (iii. 8). Cf. Xen. He had retired to Thurii, Pausan. vi. 7, 2.,

Κνίδον a city of the Dorian Hexapolis. In ii. 9, among allies of Athens at the beginning of the war are Δωριῆς Καρσὶ πρόσοικοι, who include Κνίδος.

ἀφειστήκει ὑπὸ Τισσαφέρνους The MSS. give ἀπὸ, but Palmer's emendation is certain. If Cnidus had revolted from Tissaphernes, that would be precisely the reason why these ships should not go there, unless to attack it The point of ἤδη is that the place wanted no further bringing over by the Peloponnesians. They are commissioned to guard it. ἀπὸ for ὑπὸ was, in the circumstances of the quasi-passive, a natural error. Indeed, the confusion is common enough (cf. c. 107, § 1). The construction is as with τεθνεώτων ὑπὸ (c. 38, § 3), ἀνίστασθαι ὑπὸ (i. 8), πληγὰς ἔλαβεν ὑπὸ (v. 50), etc.
