ἐξανήγετο, ‘proceeded to set sail into the open.’

ἐν τῷ πελάγει to be joined with ὡς ἑώρα. With μετεωρισθεὶς we should expect ἐς τὸ πέλαγος The sense is ‘S. got out into the open, and when lying out there took observations,’ as if μετέωρος γενόμενος καὶ περιμένων.

ἑώρα imperf. ‘began to find’

πολλὰς predic., sub. οὔσας. Cf. c. 8 (fin.), πολύ.
