ἀφανές . . . ἦν sc. what was going on, ‘the state of things.’ τὴν ἄκραν τὸ Κυνὸς σῆμα Cf. i. 47, τῇ Λευκίμμη τῷ ἀκρωτηρίῳ; iv. 46, τὴν Νισαίαν τὸν λιμένα; iv. 70, ὑπὸ τῷ ὄρει τῇ Γερανείᾳ. The name is repeated for clearness' sake. διὰ τὸ κρατήσαντες . . . διώκοντες It seems necessary to admit this anomaly into Thucydidean syntax. διὰ τὸ διώκοντες (= διώκειν by a confusion) κρατήσαντες (‘when victorious’) is akin to iv. 63, διὰ τὸ ἤδη φοβεροὺς παρόντας Ἀθηναίους, and v. 7, οὐ βουλόμενος αὐτοὺς διὰ τὸ ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ καθημένους βαρύνεσθαι. σφῶν = ἑαυτῶν.
