The genitive ending -εω, which is always pronounced as one syllable § 43), seems to have been substituted in the text, not uncommonly, for the elided -α_᾽(ο), which was the earlier ending. E. g. the first line of the Iliad very likely ended originally, “Πηληϊάδα? Ἀχιλῆος”.
