[*] 649. A few cases of πρὶν ἄν with the optative, if the text is sound, are to be explained (like those of ἕως ἄν, 613, 4, end) as indirect discourse in which the direct form had πρίν ἄν with the subjunctive. See XEN. Hell. ii. 4, 18 (quoted in 702).
