[*] 630. There remain some cases of πρίν with the infinitive after negative clauses where the older usage seems to be retained in place of the more exact later use of the indicative or subjunctive. E.g. Οὐδὲ πρὸς δικαστηρίῳ οὐδὲ βουλευτηρίῳ ὤφθην οὐδεπώποτε, πρὶν ταύτην τὴν συμφορὰν γενέσθαι, i.e. never, until this calamity befell me. LYS. xix. 55. Ἐπειδὴ δ᾽ οὐκ οἷόν τ᾽ ἐστὶν αἰσθέσθαι (τοὺς πονηροὺς) πρὶν κακῶς τινα παθεῖν ὑπ᾽ αὐτῶν, but since it is not possible to recognise them until somebody is hurt by them (for πρὶν ἂν πάθῃ τις). ISOC. xx. 14.In such cases the temporal relation seems to exclude the other in the writer's mind.
