（Τίγγις). Now Tangier; a city of Mauretania, on the southern coast of the Fretum Gaditanum (Strait of Gibraltar), and a place of very great antiquity. It was made by Augustus a free city, and by Claudius a colony, and the capital of Mauretania Tingitana.
