αὐτόγνωτος, act., deciding for oneself, αὐτὴ γιγνώσκουσα, like “μεμπτός”, ‘blaming,’ “ὕποπτος”, ‘suspecting,’ etc. (O. C. 1031 n.). Not pass., ‘resolved upon’ (i.e. here, ‘adopted’) ‘by one's own choice,’ as Ellendt takes it (‘ultro susceptus’), and as the Schol. perh. did, who gives, “αὐθαίρετος καὶ ἰδιογνώμων τρόπος.
