SANTA VITÓRIA DO AMEIXIAL

Village between Estremoz and Sousel, site
of a Roman villa of the 4th c. A.D. In the baths is a mosaic (ca. 10 x 7 m) representing the Rape of Europa,
the Cortege of Amphitrite, and Odysseus with the Sirens. There are also various tabulae lusoriae and medallions representing the winds. This and other mosaics, some of the richest in Portugal, are in the National
Museum of Archaeology in Lisbon. The urban section
of the villa has been only partially excavated.
