MASSA MARITTIMA Grosseto, Italy.

The environs of this city are rich in mines of silver-bearing lead ore. Along with mediaeval pits, other pits have been found which date from the Etruscan age. These pits are different in construction technique from those of more modern date, and Etruscan material has also been found near them.

In the neighborhood of Massa Marittima several prehistoric habitation sites dug into the cliffs have come to light. The necropolis near the little lake of Accesa has produced material similar to that from Vetulonia, now on exhibit together with prehistoric material at the Museo Civico in the Palazzetto delle Armi di Cittanova at Massa Marittima.
