AVRIGNEY
Haute-Saône, France.
In the
Vergenne woods near the road from Vesontio (Besançon) to Andematunnum (Langres) are quarries which
were used in Roman times. They are connected to the
highway by a road 3-6 km long. The stone used in the
construction of the monuments of Vesontio came from
these quarries. It was on Mt. Colombin that the three-horned bronze bull was found in 1756. It is the only one
(with that of Martigny) of large size, but it is better
preserved than the latter and more naturalistic. It has
been in the museum at Besançon since 1873.
