Phoebus
(
*Foi=bos), i.e. the shining, pure or bright, occurs both as an epithet and a name of Apollo, in his capacity of god of the sun. (
Hom. Il. 1.43,
443;
Verg. A. 3.251;
Hor. Carm. 3.21, 24;
Macr. 1.17; comp. APOLLO, HELIOS.) Some ancients derived the name from Apollo's grandmother Phoebe. (Aeschyl.
Eum. 8.)
