χώρας οἰκείας. Amphipolis, Pydna, and Potidæa. Cf. i. § 12 (notes).

οὓς δ᾽ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ συμμάχους. The war is that undertaken in 378 by the Athenians and Bœotians jointly against Sparta. In the same year Athens formed her second maritime league.

εἰρήνης οὔσης. The Social War waged by Athens against her revolted allies lasted 357-355, and during this period Athens was at peace with the other Grecian states.

ἠσκήκαμεν, “trained.” For the metaphor see § 27, note on ἐρημίας.
