Hermopŏlis

Ἑρμόπολις). “City of Hermes.”

Parva (
ἡ μικρά), a city of
Lower Egypt, stood upon the canal which connected the Canopic branch of the Nile with Lake
Mareotis.
2.
Magna (
ἡ μεγάλη), an ancient
city in Middle Egypt, standing on the west bank of the Nile, a little below the confines of
Upper Egypt. This place was famous for its worship of
Anubis (q.v.) or Hermanubis; and was the sacred burial-place of the ibis.
