Aethiŏpes
A name said to be from
αἴθω and
ὤψ, but perhaps really a foreign name corrupted, was applied
1.
most generally to all black or dark races of men;
2.
to all the inhabitants of Inner Africa, south of Mauretania, the Great Desert, and Egypt,
from the Atlantic to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, and to some of the dark races of Asia;
and
3.
most specifically to the inhabitants of the land south of Egypt, which was called
Aethiopia (q.v.).
