Arsinŏë
(
Ἀρσινόη). The name of several cities, each called after
one or other of the persons mentioned above. Of these the most important were:
1.
In the Nomos Hero öpolites in Lower Egypt, near or upon the head of the Sinus
Heroöpolites, or west branch of the Red Sea (Gulf of Suez). It was afterwards called
Cleopatra.
2.
The chief city of the Nomos Arsinoïtes in Middle Egypt; formerly called
Crocodilopolis, from its being the chief seat of the Egyptian worship of the crocodile.
