MARES

Eth. MARES (Μᾶρες), a tribe on the coast of Pontus, in the neighbourhood of the Mosynoeci. (Hecat. Fragm. 192; Hdt. 3.94.) Their armour, when serving in the army of Xerxes, is described by Herodotus (7.79) as having consisted of helmets of wicker-work, leather shields, and javelins. Later writers do not mention this tribe.
