Ταπροβάνη). Now Ceylon; a great island of the Indian
Ocean, opposite to the southern extremity of India intra Gangem. The Gauls got their first
knowledge of it from the explorations of Megasthenes and Onesicritus in the time of Alexander
the Great. In the time of the emperor Claudius an embassy from Rome actually visited it (
