Onomarchus
(
Ὀνόμαρχος). A general of the Phocians in the Sacred War,
succeeded his brother Philomelus in this command, B.C. 353. In the following year he was
defeated in Thessaly by Philip, and perished in attempting to reach by swimming the Athenian
ships, which were lying off the shore. His body fell into the hands of Philip, who caused it
to be crucified, as a punishment for his sacrilege (
Diod.xvi.
41-61).
