Ombi
(
Ὄμβοι). The last great city of Upper Egypt, except
Syené. It stood on the eastern bank of the Nile, in the Ombites Nomos, and was
celebrated as one of the chief seats of the worship of the crocodile. Juvenal's Fifteenth
Satire is founded on a religious war between the people of Ombi and those of Tentyra, who
hated the crocodile (
Ptol.iv. 5, 73;
Aelian,
H. A. x. 21).
