Maeōtis Palus

Μαιῶτις Λίμνη). The modern Sea of Azov; an inland sea on the borders of Europe and Asia, north of the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea), with which it communicates by the Bosporus Cimmerius. The Scythian tribes on its banks were called by the collective name of Maeotae or Maeotici. The sea had also the names of Cimmerium or Bosporicum Maré. The Amazons are called Maeotides, as living near by.
