1.
King of Sparta, B.C. 491-469. He commanded the Greek fleet in 479, and defeated the
Persians at the battle of Mycalé.
2.
The reputed son of Agis II., excluded from the throne in consequence of his being suspected
to be the son of Alcibiades by Timaea, the queen of Agis. His uncle, Agesilaüs II.,
was therefore substituted in his stead (
Hellen. iii. 3).
