Aegobolium
(
αἰγοβόλιον). A ceremony of purification in which the
candidate was placed in a pit and covered with perforated boards, over which a goat was slain.
The blood flowing down into the pit stained its occupant. If a bull was used, the rite was
called
taurobolium; and if a ram,
