URVINUM METAURENSE
(Urbino) Marche, Italy.
A municipium inscribed in the tribus Stellatina,
situated on a hill between the rivers Metaurus and
Pisaurus (Foglia) in what was once Umbria. Its origins
are obscure; in 1903-4 at Monte Rossano between Urbino
and the Metaurus were found hut foundations of the
Early Iron Age. Fortifications around the crown of the
hill can be traced with some uncertainty; from these it
appears to have been more a fortress than a town. In
1942 remains of a Roman theater came to light near S.
Domenico but were reburied.
