DALSWINTON
Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
Three successive Roman forts guarded the crossing of the
river Nith 9 km N of Dumfries. One, which has revealed two periods of occupation, lies on the flood plain
and is at least 2.6 ha in extent; the other pair (3.5 and
4.5 ha), which are probably later in date, occupy the
high ground immediately to the N and are superimposed.
All three forts are believed to be of Flavian date.
