first place, the king is now well-disposed to all the Greeks, and yet to us
least of all, unless we can effect some immediate improvement. In the second
place, many so-called “protectors” are springing up
everywhere, and all states are rivals for the leadership, but unfortunately some
hold aloof, in mutual jealousy and distrust, and so each state has isolated
itself—Argives, Thebans, Lacedaemonians, Corinthians, Arcadians,
ourselves.
