Linked Data Finland
★★★★★★
WarSampo Knowledge Graph includes harmonized data of different kinds concerning the Second World War in Finland, separated in different subgraphs representing events, actors, places, photographs, and other aspects and documentation of the war. The data covers the Winter War 1939-1940 against the Soviet attack, the Continuation War 1941-1944 where the occupied areas of the Winter War were temporarily regained, and the Lapland War 1944-1945, where the Finns pushed the German troops away from Lapland.
To test and demonstrate its usefulness, this Knowledge Graph is in use in the semantic portal WarSampo, explained in more detail in the project page.
The Knowledge Graph is published on Zenodo with a version history
Example SPARQL queries for the data:
- Events, photographs and articles that are situated in Vyborg
- Casualties of the 1st Division and its subunits in the time interval 13.2.-13.3.1940 by place and date

Detailed Dataset Contents
Karelian map names 1922-44 (URI: http://ldf.fi/warsa/places/karelian_places)
( Browse data / View in Sotasampo.fi )This graph contains Finnish map names from the Karelian region (currently divided between Russia and Finland). The source data was a CSV table with roughly 40 000 map names, which were picked from Karelian maps (dated 1922-1944) by Jyrki Tiittanen (National Land Survey of Finland). The CSV table provided a label, coordinates and a place type (6 different types) for each map name.
RDF version with additional municipality and county information was created by SeCo @ Aalto University.
Information included: label, coordinates (WGS84), place type, municipality, county
Example resource URI: http://ldf.fi/warsa/places/karelian_places/k_place_30
Finnish municipalities 1939-44 (URI: http://ldf.fi/warsa/places/municipalities)
( Browse data / View in Sotasampo.fi )This graph contains information about Finnish municipalities during the years 1939-44. The names of the municipalities of were collected from a map application produced by the National Archives of Finland. Additional information like the county of the municipality and information about occupation or regaining of the municipality were also collected.
The next phase was to retrieve polygons for the municipalities from the Finnish Spatio-temporal Ontology (SAPO). As the SAPO ontology contains municipality polygons from different time periods, we chose only the polygons that were valid in the year 1939. We got 612 municipalities from the National Archives' map application, and matched their names to SAPO labels. In total 506 polygons were added.
Information included: label, polygon, coordinates of centre point (WGS84), place type, county, information about occupation or regaining of the municipality during the Second World War

Information included: official name of the cemetery, cemetery name used in Casualties database, coordinates (WGS84), current municipality, former municipality, street address, foundation date, number of graves, memorial (with sculptor and unveiling date), architect, photographs

URI Data Services
Give the URI without brackets (<>) and without encoding.
Human Use Case 1: Viewing the RDF Description of a URI
Human Use Case 2: Linked Data Browsing Starting from a URI
Machine Use Case: Getting the RDF Description of a Resource
If the URI is dereferenceable, e.g., minted at the http://ldf.fi domain, just input the URI in a browser or use it in your favourite software. For example: URI=http://ldf.fi/finlex/laki/p35. If the URI is described in this LDF service you can use the URI template http://ldf.fi/SERVICE/data?uri=URI no matter whether the URI is dereferenceable or not: just input the URI in the form below:
SPARQL Endpoint: http://ldf.fi/warsa/sparql
Queries are represented using the URI template: http://ldf.fi/SERVICE/sparql?query=QUERY

SPARQL Service Description
Get the description in RDF. (Notice: A service description is not available for all datasets - then empty description is returned. If you open the link in browser you are directed to a SPARQL query form instead of the RDF description. You can access the service description by making an HTTP query without an Accept header (e.g. curl).) LDF uses W3C SPARQL Service Description recommendation for this.Visualization
