CYTHE'RA, CYTHEREIA, CYTHE'RIAS

*Kuqh/ra, (*Kuqe/reia, Κυθηριάς), different forms of a surname of Aphrodite, derived from the town of Cythera in Crete, or from the island of Cythera, where the goddess was said to have first landed, and where she had a celebrated temple. (Hom. Od. 8.288; Hdt. 1.105; Paus. 3.23.1 ; Anacr. 5.9; Hor. Carm. 1.4.5.)
