χάρις , ιτος (χαίρω, cf. gratia): quality of pleasing, grace, charm, charms, pl., Od. 6.237; then favor, thanks, gratitude; φέρειν τινι, ‘confer,’ Il. 5.211 ; ἀρέσθαι, ‘earn’; δοῦναι, ἴδμεναι, ‘thank,’ ‘be grateful,’ Il. 14.235.—Acc. as adv., χάριν, for the sake of, τινός, i. e. to please him, Il. 15.744.
