CONTESTA´NI

Eth. CONTESTA´NI (Κοντεστανοί), a people in the SE. of Hispania Tarraconensis, E. of the Bastetani. Their country, called Contestania, extended along the coast from the city of Urci, at the E. extremity of Baetica, to the river Sucro, and corresponded to Murcia and the S. part of Valencia. Besides CARTHAGO NOVA and Saetabis, they possessed the following less important cities: on the coast, Lucenti or LUCENTUM (Λουκέντοι Λούκεντον), Alonae (Ἀλωναί), the port ILICI (Ἱλλικιτανὸς λιμήν: the city itself stood a little inland); and, in the interior, MENLARIA (Μενλαρία), VALENTIA (Οὐαλεντία), Saetabicula (Σαιταβίκουλα), and Iaspis (Ἰασπίς: Ptol. 2.6. § § 14. 62; Plin. Nat. 3.3. s. 4; Liv. Fr. xci.).
