Vindobŏna
Now Vienna; the German Wien. A town in Pannonia, on the Danube, originally a Keltic place,
and subsequently a Roman municipium. Under the Romans it became a town of importance; it was
the chief station of the Roman fleet on the Danube, and the headquarters of a Roman legion.
Here the emperor Marcus Aurelius died in A.D. 180. The place was taken and sacked by Attila
(
Ptol.ii. 15, 3; Iornand.
Get. 50).
