CUMIDAVA
(Rîşnov) Braşov, Romania.
Roman camp and civil settlement near the modern town.
The name is mentioned by Ptolemy (3.8.4). The camp
(114 x 130 m) was built of earth in the first half of the
2d c.; it was built in stone and enlarged (124 x 118 m),
and rebuilt again towards the middle of the 3d c. The
stone walls that enclose it had round corners defended
inside by rectangular towers. Its gates were flanked by
two slightly protruding bastions.
The Cohors VI nova Cumidavensium was stationed
here; the soldiers were recruited from among the local
population. An inscription dedicated to Iulia Mamaea
was found, as well as graffiti, coins, and a quantity of
Dacian ceramics.
